Durban Harbour is a working harbour and there is a strict protocol we all have to follow.

We are allowed to cross the harbour mouth but otherwise may NOT paddle in the Shipping channel (area marked in RED on map).

If there is a group wanting to cross the harbour mouth you are advised to go in a group (not individually) – before crossing check the harbour mouth is free of shipping.

The Harbour Master Lights (marked on the map at the bottom centre) indicate ship traffic – a red light means a ship will be leaving the harbour, a green light means a ship is coming into the harbour (from sea side) and no light means no large ships (but you still need to check as there may be smaller boats using the channel).

Vetchie’s Reef is also marked on the map – please avoid it at low tide as you might damage your boat if you hit the reef. The end of the reef is demarcated by a red Buoy.
